Suspected Boko Haram bomber confesses to mosque attack
Ibrahim Mohammed, a suspected Boko Haram operative, has confessed to receiving N100,000 to bomb a mosque filled with worshippers in Maiduguri, Borno State. The revelation was shared on Wednesday by counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama on his X account.
According to security sources cited by Makama, Ibrahim was arrested on December 29 in Damaturu, Yobe State, during a raid involving Operation Hadin Kai troops and local hunters. His suspicious presence among a group of Almajirai prompted his detention and interrogation.
During questioning, Ibrahim admitted to involvement in the December 24 bombing of the Gamboru Market Mosque in Maiduguri, an attack that killed five people and injured 32 others. He revealed the operation was ordered by Boko Haram commanders operating between Adamawa State and the Mandara Mountains.

“I am Ibrahim from Michika, Adamawa. We were sent by leaders Adamu and Abubakar with two IEDs to plant inside Izala Mosque,” he said.
He described how they planted the explosives after afternoon prayers, timing the bombs to detonate during Maghrib prayers to maximize casualties. After the explosion, Ibrahim returned to the scene, posing as a civilian volunteer helping evacuate the wounded and deceased.
Disturbingly, he disclosed that suicide bombing has become a paid task within the group, with operatives earning between N70,000 and N100,000 per mission. Ibrahim expressed regret over his involvement.
Security sources also revealed that Ibrahim was part of a larger terror cell linked to Boko Haram, Ansaru, and Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), with plans for coordinated attacks across the Northeast. A notorious IED expert, Munzir Abu Ziyadah, reportedly prepared up to 10 suicide devices for upcoming operations.
After the Maiduguri bombing, Ibrahim moved to Yobe State for reconnaissance missions targeting military and local hunter groups. He also disclosed the presence of other suicide bombers deployed to Damaturu for attacks on mosques and markets.

Ibrahim admitted to abandoning a suicide vest near another Izala Mosque in Maiduguri due to tight security checks. Following his confession, security forces launched operations in the area, though no explosives have yet been found. Authorities warn that the device may have been unknowingly picked up by someone else.
