The Making of a Bollywood Icon: How Amitabh Bachchan landed the role of a lifetime in Sholay

The 1975 film Sholay is a landmark in Indian cinema, a movie that has become synonymous with Bollywood’s golden era.

The film’s memorable characters, including Jai and Veeru’s friendship and Gabbar Singh’s chilling villainy, continue to captivate audiences to this day. However, few people know that Amitabh Bachchan, who played the iconic role of Jai, was not the original choice for the part.

In a surprising revelation, Dharmendra, who played Veeru in the film, disclosed that Shatrughan Sinha was initially considered for the role of Jai. Dharmendra made this admission in an interview, stating that Amitabh Bachchan’s dedication and eagerness ultimately led him to put in a good word for the struggling actor.

Dharmendra’s endorsement proved pivotal in Amitabh’s casting. The actor frequently visited Dharmendra on set, showcasing his commitment to his craft. Impressed by Amitabh’s passion, Dharmendra decided to recommend him to the film’s makers.

During an episode of Aap Ki Adalat, Dharmendra was asked if he was responsible for getting Amitabh the role. Initially hesitant, he eventually acknowledged his role in securing the part for his friend. “Amitabh himself has started talking about it now, so I’ll admit it. Yes, I got him the role. Otherwise, it was going to Shatrughan Sinha,” Dharmendra confessed.

“Shatrughan Sinha’s Reaction to Losing the Role*

When Shatrughan Sinha discovered that he had been replaced by Amitabh, he good-naturedly confronted Dharmendra. “Paaji, you gave my role to him!” Sinha exclaimed. Dharmendra explained that Amitabh had approached him first, and he felt compelled to support his friend.

Years later, Shatrughan Sinha reflected on the missed opportunity during a reality show appearance. He revealed that at the time, he was busy filming two other projects, which prevented him from taking on the role in Sholay. Although he felt a pang of regret, Sinha was also happy that his friend Amitabh had received a life-changing break.

Amitabh Bachchan’s Portrayal of Jai

Amitabh Bachchan’s performance as Jai in Sholay cemented his status as a Bollywood legend. His on-screen chemistry with Dharmendra, the intensity he brought to the role, and the tragic ending all combined to make his portrayal unforgettable. While Shatrughan Sinha may have missed out on the opportunity, fate had other plans, and Amitabh’s journey to superstardom began with Sholay.
