Tinubu applauds Nigeria’s election to international maritime council

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria on its election to the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for the 2026–2027 term, describing the achievement as a vote of confidence in the country’s growing influence in global maritime affairs.
The election, which took place at the IMO General Assembly in London on Friday, secured Nigeria a seat in Category C of the Council, marking the country’s return after a 14-year absence. The Presidency credited the win to the concerted diplomatic efforts of the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), and Nigeria’s diplomatic corps.

In a statement, Tinubu commended the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, and the entire maritime team for their “dedication, strategic engagement and professionalism” in securing the seat. He said the election reflects international recognition of Nigeria’s commitment to maritime safety, environmental protection, and rules-based maritime operations.
The Presidency added that the new mandate provides an opportunity to advance Nigeria’s blue economy agenda, enhance maritime infrastructure, strengthen anti-piracy initiatives in the Gulf of Guinea, and position the country as a key regional shipping hub.
Maritime stakeholders welcomed the development, calling it a “landmark” moment for Nigeria’s influence in global shipping governance. The government has pledged to actively participate in shaping international maritime policy while promoting safer seas and cleaner oceans.

Nigeria last held an IMO Council seat more than a decade ago, and this election is seen as both a diplomatic and strategic win that could attract investment and boost regulatory influence over international shipping matters affecting West Africa.
