The United Kingdom Government has named Mr Peter Vowles as its next High Commissioner to Nigeria, succeeding Dr Richard Montgomery CMG.
According to a statement issued by the British High Commission in Abuja, Vowles is expected to assume office in September 2026, while Dr Montgomery will continue in the role until then.
Vowles brings decades of diplomatic and international development experience to his new assignment. He currently serves as His Majesty’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe, a position he has held since 2023. Prior to that, he was the UK Ambassador to Myanmar between 2021 and 2022.

The British High Commission noted that Vowles has occupied several senior leadership roles within the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and the former Department for International Development (DFID). These include serving as Transformation Director and Director for Asia, the Caribbean and Overseas Territories.
Throughout his career, he has worked extensively across Africa and Asia, with postings in Bangladesh, India, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Kenya. He began his professional journey in Zimbabwe, focusing on education and development programmes.
Speaking on his appointment, Vowles expressed his enthusiasm about taking up the position in Nigeria.
“I am honoured to be appointed as British High Commissioner to Nigeria,” he said.

“Nigeria is a country of immense importance to the United Kingdom, and I look forward to working closely with Nigerian partners to strengthen our relationship across trade, development and security.”
His appointment comes as the UK and Nigeria continue to deepen cooperation in key areas including economic growth, investment, governance, security and development.
