Truck rams into market in Ondo, kills 10

Story from Kenneth AFOR, Lagos

On Saturday, October 31, 2020, ten persons were confirmed dead after a truck rammed into a market at Ibaka area of Akungba Akoko, Akoko South-West Local Government Area of Ondo state.

This was confirmed by the Public Relations Officer of the state police command, Mr Tee-Leo Ikoro.

According to an eyewitness, the trailer which was loaded with bags of rice rammed into the market after having a brake failure, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

“The accident occurred at about 7.30 pm when the trailer loaded with bags of rice rammed into the stalls in the market. About 20 people must have been killed because we have removed over 10 dead bodies under the trailer and many are still trapped under the trailer,” eyewitness accounts.

Another eyewitness account said, “a woman and two of her children were among those killed by the truck. In anger, residents and traders set ablaze the bags of rice.”

However, the Police PRO, Ikoro, on his account asserts that eight persons were confirmed dead.

“As we speak now eight people have been confirmed dead in the accident and we can still have more because we still have many people trapped under the trailer,” the Police PRO.
