Wike – I have respect for the Military
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has denied claims that he is using a disputed land issue in Abuja to fight the Nigerian military, insisting that his actions were guided strictly by law and not personal sentiment.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday about the reported clash between FCTA officials and some military personnel, Wike emphasized his respect and support for the armed forces, urging Nigerians to obey lawful orders and uphold due process.
“You are told to obey legal orders, not illegal ones. If, as a security aide, your superior tells you to shoot someone, that doesn’t excuse you from being charged with murder,” Wike said.

The Minister dismissed suggestions of a feud with the military, explaining that the matter involved a private individual rather than the armed forces as an institution.
“I have great respect for the military and will continue to do so. Anyone suggesting otherwise is wrong. If I had issues with the military, I know where to go—whether it’s the Chief of Defence Staff or the President himself,” he stated.
Wike said the incident was exaggerated by individuals trying to create the impression of conflict, clarifying that his intervention came only after top FCTA officials were assaulted while performing their lawful duties.
He noted that the FCT Administration remains committed to protecting Abuja’s Master Plan and will not tolerate illegal developments or land-use violations.

“Government cannot function in a lawless society. If we allow one person to violate the rules because of who they are, others will follow. Impunity begins when the law is ignored,” he warned.
The Minister added that past disputes involving land and the military had always been resolved amicably through mutual respect and dialogue.
“As long as I remain FCT Minister, the law will take its course. Abuja must reflect the image of Nigeria—disciplined, planned, and lawful,” Wike declared.
