Woman divorces husband for refusing to repair phone

A marriage has been dissolved after Zainab Alhassan sought a divorce from her husband, Tijjani Muhammad, citing his refusal to repair her ₦70,000 damaged cell phone.
Appearing in court on Tuesday, Alhassan declared that she was “not longer interested in the marriage” and was ready to proceed with a Khul’i—a form of divorce where the wife returns the dowry to the husband.

Alhassan told the court that she was ready to return the ₦30,000 dowry to regain her freedom.
The former wife alleged that her husband was responsible for the damage. “She told the court that she was watching a movie on her phone when her husband started fighting her, collected her phone and allegedly smashed it.” She did, however, concede that she had no witness to substantiate her claim.
For his part, the husband, Muhammad, stated that he “does not have a problem with her divorce plea but disagreed with the claim that he damaged her phone.”

The Judge, Malam Mu’awiyya Shehu, ultimately dissolved the marriage on the basis of Khul’i but dismissed Alhassan’s request for the phone to be repaired.
