Woman kills 8-month-old daughter with rat poison

A 30-year-old woman, Mercy Michael, has been remanded in a correctional facility by a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, for allegedly killing her eight-month-old daughter with rat poison.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) charged Michael with culpable homicide, an offence under Section 189 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law.

According to NSCDC prosecutor Marcus Audu, the case was reported on December 11 by Godfrey Sunday, a resident of Fadia Bakut, Zonkwa. Audu stated that on December 10, Michael allegedly fed her infant daughter rat poison. Despite being rushed to the General Hospital, Zonkwa, the child tragically died the following day.

The case was initially reported to the Salama Sexual Assault Referral Centre, Kafanchan, before being handed over to the NSCDC for investigation.

Presiding Judge Samson Kwasu declined to take the defendant’s plea, citing lack of jurisdiction. The prosecutor was instructed to forward the case file to the State Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice.

The case has been adjourned to December 17 for further mention.
