Zulum launches massive Ramadan food support for 300,000 families across Borno
Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has commenced the distribution of Ramadan palliatives to 300,000 households across the 27 local government areas of the state.
The initiative, flagged off at Ramat Square on Tuesday, is aimed at easing the economic hardship faced by vulnerable residents during the holy month of Ramadan.
Under the programme, each beneficiary household will receive one bag of rice, one bag of millet, and 10kg of sugar.
Addressing members of the distribution committee, Governor Zulum stressed the need for transparency and fairness in the exercise.
“To the committee in charge of this distribution, let transparency be your watchword and fairness your guide. These items are not for sale, nor are they meant for friends or family members who are not in need,” he said.

He warned that the food supplies are strictly for widows, orphans, internally displaced persons, struggling farmers, and low-income earners, adding that any official found diverting the items would face legal consequences.
Governor Zulum also directed that the support be extended to Christian residents observing Lent, which coincides with Ramadan this year.
“This gesture will also reach non-Muslims who are fasting during Lent within this Ramadan period,” he stated.
The governor’s administration has maintained a tradition of supporting Christian communities, including food distribution during Christmas and providing free transport for non-indigenous Christians travelling to celebrate the festive season with their families.
In their remarks, Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan and the Secretary to the State Government, Bukar Tijani, praised Zulum’s continued commitment to assisting the vulnerable.
Also speaking, the Director-General of the Borno State Emergency Management Agency, Ali Abdullahi Isa, assured residents that the agency is fully prepared to ensure a smooth and hitch-free distribution process.
The launch ceremony drew the attendance of members of the House of Representatives, Engr. Bukar Talba and Abdulkadir Rahis, Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly Abdulkarim Lawan, Acting Chief of Staff Dr Babagana Mustapha Mallumbe, and other senior government officials.
