Adamawa Assembly wants state, LGs to provide relief materials for flood victims

The Adamawa State House of Assembly has passed resolutions mandating the Adamawa State Government and council chairmen of Shelleng, Guyuk, Numan, Demsa and Lamurde Local Government Areas (LGAs) to provide emergency relief materials to victims of flood in their respective areas.

The house also directed its relevant standing committees to liaise with state ministries of Environment, Water Resources, Agriculture, and federal authorities concerned to provide lasting solution to the issue of flood across the state.

The house resolutions followed a matter of urgent public importance raised by the member representing Shelleng constituency in the seventh assembly, Honourable Abubakar Isa on the recent flood disaster in Shelleng town on August 8 which destroyed houses, farmlands, food items, livestock and other valuables.

He explained that the major causes of the flood which among others include overflowing of river Gongola, Daɗin Kowa Dam, management of Kiri Dam and collapse of the river embankments in Shelleng.

The lawmaker prayed the House to pass resolutions and mandate relevant authorities to provide the victims with emergency assistance, especially building materials, food items, and beddings, and to assist to relocate those affected to safer sites and reconstruct River Gongola enbakments in Shelleng constituency.

The deputy speaker and member representing Numan, Honourable Pwamakeino Mackondo, his counterparts of Lamurde Honourable Myandasa Bauna, Honourable Adwawa Donglock of Guyuk and Honourable Mrs. Kate Raymond Mamuno of Demsa, speaking on the existing order, said flood is one of the major problems of people of their constituencies, especially those residing in riverine areas.

Others who contributed on the matter of urgent public importance raised by member representing Shelleng Honourable Abubakar Isa, were Rt. Honourable Kabiru Mijinyawa of Yola South and Abdullahi Umar Yapak of Verre constituencies who explained that most parts of the state are experiencing flooding during the rainy season, including the state capital.

The lawmakers expressed concern over the attitude of some people who are building their houses, shops and filing station on water ways especially around Chochi irrigation site along Yola road.

Thereafter, speaker of the house Rt. Honourable Aminu Iya Abbas, mandated the house standing committees to liase with relevant ministries and agencies to profer lasting solution.

He therefore directed the clerk of the house to communicate the resolution to other appropriate authorities for emergency action.
