NMA tasks Adamawa govt on new salary structure for doctors

Story from Usman IBRAHIM, Yola

The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) Adamawa State Chapter has called on the state government to implement the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) for doctors working in the state.

Chairman of the association, Dr Solomon Bulus, made the call at the 2022 NMA Adamawa Physicians Week in Yola, with the theme “Nigeria’s Healthcare Delivery System and 2023 Democratic Transition: A Time to Change the Narrative”.

Bulus said that the implementation would cushion the economic hardship affecting medical practitioners in the state.

“This will possibly motivate the state doctors and even reduce the rate of brain drain. The Nigerian doctor today is poorly paid, overworked, lacks necessary work tools, and has become a target for kidnap.

“It is a heartbreaking situation for Nigerian doctors because the review of CONMESS has been overdue since 2014 based on the 2009 Collective Bargaining Agreement which was signed with the government which stipulated a review after five years”, he said.

Bulus appreciated the efforts of the state government in the infrastructural development recorded in the health sector and urged for more efforts.

Responding, Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, represented by the Commissioner Ministry of Health, Professor Abdullahi Isa, appreciated the contributions of doctors in the state.

He said that his administration has the health sector as a priority as contained in his 12-points agenda, to provide quality healthcare delivery for the citizens.

Fintiri said his administration has built and renovated over 40 Primary Healthcare facilities and six cottage hospitals in the state.

He added that the medical equipment for the healthcare facilities is arriving in the state from the United States of America.
