UN Assistant Secretary General commends Yobe State for pioneering IDP policy
Story from Kasim Isa MUHAMMAD
The United Nations Assistant Secretary General, Robert Piper, has praised Yobe State Government for its groundbreaking policy on Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).
Neptune Prime reported that Yobe State has made history as the first state in Nigeria to launch a comprehensive policy addressing the complex issues faced by IDPs.
In a statement on his official X handle, Piper commended the policy, saying it demonstrates the government’s commitment to bringing positive change to the lives of IDPs.
He noted that the policy has positioned Yobe State Governor as a leader in addressing displacement issues.
Meanwhile, Governor Mai Mala Buni said the policy was built on principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, and independence.
Buni added that its strategic objectives focus on protection, access to essential services, and sustainable solutions for displacement.

It was gathered that the policy prioritises the rights and dignity of all displaced individuals, especially women, children, and other vulnerable groups, ensuring their active participation in decision-making processes.
Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency, Dr Mohammed Goje, expressed delight at the UN’s recognition of Governor Buni’s efforts to provide welfare to the citizens of Yobe State.
He emphasised that Yobe State has consistently been at the forefront of providing support to vulnerable people, especially IDPs, and that the policy will bring significant changes to the state’s displacement status.
It could be recalled that the Yobe State Policy on Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) was officially launched on 4 July 2024, at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, by Governor Buni.
