VP Shettima opens North-East climate change summit in Gombe (picture)

Vice President Kashim Shettima has declared open the North-East climate change summit in Gombe State.
The submit was organised by the North-East Development Commission with a theme “charting a path for sustainable climate action in the North-East”.
The summit commenced on Wednesday, 18 Sept 2024 at the International Conference Centre Gombe.
In his opening remark, the special guest of honour, Senator Kashim Shettima, represented by his special adviser on general duties, Dr. Aliyu Modibbo, said the establishment of the North-East Development Commission represents a significant step towards a coordinated and effective response to the complex challenges faced in the region.
In his goodwill message, the Executive Governor of Yobe State, Alhaji Mai Mala Buni, CON, (Chiroman Gujba) represented by his Deputy, Alhaji Idi Barde Gubana (Wazirin Fune), pointed out that the summit came at the right time considering the current flooding in Maiduguri and some parts of Yobe State.
He called on the participants to intensify the study of challenges pertaining climate change in Maiduguri for lasting solution.
He sympathised with the victims of floods and Boko Haram attack on Mafa village.
He further appealed for the rehabilitation of the bridge and road from Gombe to Damaturu and Bauchi to Damaturu respectively.
He said Yobe is expanding agricultural production area by rehabilitating degraded oasis, promoting agricultural water management scheme in riverine areas, as well as renovating existing tree nurseries where seedlings would be produced and subsequently used to establish shelterbelts, orchard and stabilise sand dunes.
Also speaking, the Chairman, Board of Directors of NEDC, Major General Paul Tarfa, informed the gathering that the role of the north east development commission extends beyond immediate humanitarian relief to encompass long term development goals.
He said the North-East development commission has also been at the forefront in addressing the menace of poverty, illiteracy and ecological problems, which are particularly prominent in the region due to the adverse effects of climate change and insecurity.
Highlights of the summit was the tree planting exercise which was launched by the Vice President.
The deputy governor was accompanied by the chairman, House Committee on Environment, Honourable Ahmad Lawan Dumbol; Commissioner of Housing and Urban Development, Architect Ahmad Buba Abba Kyari and special adviser on environment, Malam Mohammed Ismail Nguru.
Other members are the permanent secretary Ministry of Environment, Alhaji Tonga Betara; ALGON chairman Yobe State chapter, Honourable Bukar Adamu and General Manager State Environmental Protection Agency, Babagana Modu.
Also in attendance is the Emir of Fika and chairman Yobe state council of traditional rulers, Dr. Mohammed Abali Ibn Mohammed Idrissa.
