An optimistic perspective on leadership and governance, by Architect Baba Isimi

Democracy often struggles to cultivate quality leadership within a largely uninformed society. For true progress to occur, we must prioritize substantial improvements in both the quantity and quality of education for our citizens. This phenomenon is not unique to Nigeria; it can be observed globally.

While there is a noticeable competence deficit in the current Nigerian government, they have exhibited a commendable courage of conviction. This trait is essential for effective governance, even in the face of challenges. However, it’s crucial to recognize that they also grapple with deficits in empathy and integrity. Encouragingly, they appear to be fine-tuning these shortcomings, actively engaging with harsh criticism, and maintaining focus on their objectives. This resilience is a positive indicator of their confidence in the direction of their policy measures.

Looking ahead to 2026-27, I am hopeful that we will begin to see tangible changes in governance and policy effectiveness. It is better to engage our leadership with constructive discourse rather than virulent criticism in order to aid their success for the sake of our children and future generations. It is essential to promote dialogue and collaboration between the government and the citizens to enhance the quality of governance in a democracy.

In addition, to emphasizing the importance of civilized engagement, we must have respect for the nation and its symbols.

Ultimately, the path to meaningful change requires patience and collective effort. By fostering a culture of understanding and constructive criticism, we can help shape a governance landscape that prioritizes the well-being of all citizens. While my heart may be unsettled by the ongoing political maneuvers, my rational analysis reassures me that the government is gradually getting into its stride and confronting Nigeria’s economic challenges with a thoughtful approach.

It is my hope that, through these efforts, we will cultivate a brighter future for Nigeria—one grounded in reason and guided by a commitment to the common good.
