Policeman opens fire, kills 3, injures 1

Story from Hamzat Ibrahim

A policeman in Calabar, Cross River State, has gone on a shooting spree in the Watt business area, killing three people and injuring one.

On Sunday morning, eyewitnesses reported on social media that they were in the area when the officer suddenly emerged from a nearby police station with his cocked gun and began shooting, FIJ reports.

“We had to run for dear life,” a witness told FIJ. “The bullet hit no fewer than four people, leaving three dead and one injured.” Some onlookers speculated that the policeman “ran mad.”

FIJ contacted the Cross River State Police Complaints Unit, but officials could not confirm the exact casualty count at the time.

The state police command, however, acknowledged the incident and confirmed the officer’s arrest.

Via X, @CRS_PoliceNG stated, “The matter has been handled this morning and the inspector is in detention. A press release will be released in a short while.”

The police have yet to disclose the officer’s identity or confirm the exact death toll.
