Yobe government begins distribution of 3 million mosquito nets to tackle malaria

Story by Sa’adatu MAINA, Damaturu

The Yobe State government has launched the distribution of 3 million insecticide-treated mosquito nets to combat malaria in the state.

The flag-off ceremony was held at the Emir’s Palace in Damaturu on Friday.

Governor Buni, represented by his Deputy Alhaji Idi Barde Gubana kick-started the distribution, emphasising the state government’s commitment to eliminating malaria in line with the federal government’s agenda.

The governor urged traditional and community leaders to cooperate with health officials to promote ownership and usage of the nets.

“We need the support of all stakeholders to ensure the success of this initiative,” said Buni.

State Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr Muhammad Lawan Gana, highlighted the severity of malaria as a public health challenge in Nigeria.

“Malaria is a serious public health challenge in Nigeria, affecting millions and claiming lives, especially among pregnant women and children under five,” he said.

On his remarks, the National Coordinator of the National Malaria Elimination Programme, Dr Antenna Ogbulofor, represented by Migret Chibuotutu, explained that this year’s campaign involves data-driven targeted distribution and geospatial mapping to reach high-burden areas efficiently.

The Emir of Damaturu, who is the royal father of the event, Dr Shehu Hashimi II bin Umar Al-amin El-Kanemi, appealed to community members to use the nets correctly and consistently as an effective barrier against malaria.
