Anthony Joshua escapes with injuries in Ogun road crash, two die

World-renowned boxer Anthony Joshua was involved in a fatal road accident on Monday in Makun, Ogun State, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

Eyewitnesses said the crash occurred shortly after 11 a.m. when the Lexus SUV conveying the boxer reportedly collided with a stationary truck under circumstances that are still under investigation.

A PUNCH staff member who witnessed the incident, Adeniyi Orojo, told PUNCH Online that Joshua sustained minor injuries, while two occupants of the vehicle died on the spot. The accident occurred just before the Danco Filling Station in Makun, near the Sagamu Interchange on the Ibadan-bound lane.

According to Orojo, the convoy consisted of two vehicles—a Lexus SUV and a Pajero SUV. Joshua was seated behind the driver in the Lexus, alongside another passenger, while a fourth occupant sat in the front passenger seat. His security personnel were in the second vehicle.

“It was a two-vehicle convoy. Joshua was seated behind the driver, with another person beside him, while another passenger was beside the driver, making four occupants in the Lexus that crashed,” Orojo said.

He added that bystanders immediately attempted rescue efforts and alerted oncoming motorists before officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps arrived at the scene.

“The passenger beside the driver and the person sitting next to Joshua died instantly,” he said.

Joshua, who was born to British-Nigerian parents, attended a boarding school in Ikenne, a town located a few kilometres from where the accident occurred.

The boxer recently defeated YouTuber-turned-fighter Jake Paul in a highly publicised bout in Miami on December 19, 2025, knocking him out in the sixth round. He is also expected to face longtime rival Tyson Fury in 2026.

Following the incident, fans took to social media to express concern, while authorities continue investigations into the cause of the crash.
