Ex-Major Chukwuemeka Okoro sues Nigerian Army over alleged forced service after resignation

A former officer of the Nigerian Army, Major (retd.) Chukwuemeka Okoro, has filed a lawsuit against the military authorities, alleging that he was compelled to continue service despite formally resigning his commission.

The suit was filed at the Federal High Court, where Major Okoro is challenging what he described as the Army’s refusal to acknowledge and process his resignation submitted through official military channels.

According to court filings, Okoro claimed that even after submitting his resignation, the Nigerian Army continued to assign him duties, issue operational directives, and treat him as an active duty officer, an action he said amounted to unlawful coercion.

He is asking the court to declare that the alleged actions of the Army violated his constitutional rights, including his right to personal liberty and freedom of employment. The claimant is also seeking financial compensation for the hardship and professional disruption allegedly suffered as a result of the continued service.

Reacting to the development, the Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier-General Onyema Nwachukwu, said the Nigerian Army had not yet been officially served with the court papers as of the time of filing the report. He stated that the Army would respond appropriately once served.

No judge handling the matter and no specific resignation date have been officially disclosed. The case has been adjourned to a later date to be communicated by the court.
