Maina demands whistleblower fee for ₦1.3 trillion recovered by EFCC

Former Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT) official, Abdulrasheed Maina, has reportedly demanded his whistleblower fee following the recovery of ₦1.3 trillion in misappropriated funds traced to pension fraud by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Sources said Maina claimed entitlement to the reward after providing crucial information that led to the tracing, seizure, and repatriation of the massive sum, which was allegedly diverted by unscrupulous actors over several years.

The whistleblower fee, which is usually a percentage of recovered funds as stipulated under Nigeria’s Whistleblower Protection Policy, is intended to encourage the public to assist in the recovery of looted public funds. Maina’s claim has reignited discussions on the administration of recovered funds and the transparency of whistleblower payments.

EFCC spokesmen confirmed the recovery but said that the process of verifying the whistleblower’s entitlement is ongoing. “We are reviewing claims in accordance with the law to ensure compliance and fairness,” the commission stated.

Legal experts note that whistleblower claims in cases involving trillions of naira can take time to process due to verification requirements and coordination with other government agencies, including the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation and the Federal Ministry of Finance.

The development underscores Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to tackle pension fraud and other forms of large-scale financial crimes while balancing incentives for insiders to provide actionable intelligence.
