Abuja High Court convicts man for Facebook impersonation

The Abuja Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has brought Abass Aminu Abdulkareem to court on charges of internet fraud.
Abdulkareem appeared before Justice O. I. Adelaja of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Kubwa, facing a single-count charge.
According to the charge, Abdulkareem assumed the identity of Jeremiah Lincoln, a United States citizen, on a Facebook profile page. Under this false identity, he managed to deceive Amanda, who happened to be Lincoln’s cousin, and obtained $270 (equivalent to N243,000).

Abdulkareem entered a guilty plea, leading to his conviction and a sentence of community service under the supervision of the Nigerian Correctional Service’s officers.
As part of the judgment, Abdulkareem also forfeited his iPhone 12 Pro and XR to the Federal Government.
The EFCC continues its relentless efforts to combat internet fraud within Nigeria and urges citizens to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious financial activities.
The agency emphasized its commitment to prosecuting anyone caught engaging in such illicit activities.
