Derek Chauvin, ex-cop who killed George Floyd stabbed in prison – Reports

Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer convicted of murdering George Floyd, has been seriously injured in a stabbing by another inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Arizona, according to reports from media outlets in the United States.

Chauvin, who was filmed kneeling on Floyd’s neck for over nine minutes, was sentenced to 22 and a half years in prison in April 2021 for murder and manslaughter charges.

In June 2022, he was also sentenced to 21 years in prison for violating Floyd’s civil rights in a separate case.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed that an inmate at the Tucson prison was stabbed, but did not identify the inmate by name.

Floyd’s death in 2020 sparked enormous protests against police brutality and racism, with “I can’t breathe” becoming a rallying call for change in the US and numerous other countries.

Chauvin’s lawyers had previously argued that he was denied his right to a fair trial due to excessive publicity before the trial and concerns about public safety if he were acquitted.

The US Supreme Court declined to hear Chauvin’s appeal of his conviction for second-degree murder in June.

Three other former officers involved in Floyd’s death received prison sentences ranging from three years to 57 months.

In June, a US Justice Department investigation into the Minneapolis police found that officers often used violent and racist practices, including unjustified deadly force.
