DSS arrests alleged vote-buyer with bags of money
The Department of State Services (DSS) has apprehended a suspected vote-buyer in the ongoing Ondo governorship election, capturing attention as security operatives maintain vigilance to prevent electoral malpractices.
The suspect was detained at Ward 4, Polling Unit 007, just outside St. Stephen’s Primary School in Akure, Ondo State, at approximately 9 a.m. on election day. According to DSS reports, the individual was caught in possession of two large bags filled with money, suspected to be intended for voter inducement.
The incident underscores concerns over the prevalence of vote-buying in Nigerian elections and highlights the DSS’s commitment to maintaining a fair and transparent voting process. DSS operatives acted swiftly to neutralize the alleged threat to electoral integrity by intercepting the suspect and seizing the cash at the polling unit.
Meanwhile, officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) commenced election operations in Ondo State, with materials being distributed across polling stations, including Okitipupa LGA. Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa cast his vote earlier in the day, expressing optimism about the electoral process and maintaining that he has an advantage in the ongoing race.
The DSS has promised to continue its efforts to tackle vote-buying and related electoral offenses, which undermine the democratic process.
