Eight UNIJOS students killed in Plateau road crash

Eight people have died in a tragic road accident opposite Unity Bank on Zaria Road in Jos, the Plateau State capital. The crash occurred in the early hours of Thursday and involved a trailer and a bus carrying University of Jos students.

Eyewitnesses reported that eleven students were on the bus. Seven were pronounced dead at the scene, and one more later died at the hospital, bringing the death toll to eight. Three others are receiving treatment. All victims were male.

According to witnesses, the bus was speeding and attempted a dangerous overtaking maneuver, causing the driver to lose control.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Public Education Officer, Peter Longsan, confirmed the incident, stating that the distress call was received around 2:30 a.m. He said the FRSC team found seven deceased at the scene, with another victim later dying in hospital care.

Sector Commander Olajide Mogaji of FRSC Plateau urged motorists to avoid night trips, excessive speed, dangerous driving, driving under the influence, and driving while fatigued or unwell, noting that these are major causes of road fatalities. “The government wants you alive to enjoy life, especially during the festive season,” he added. He also reminded the public to report crashes or emergencies via the FRSC toll-free number, 122.
