FG declares October 1st as public holiday for Nigeria’s 65th independence
The Federal Government has officially declared October 1, 2025 as a public holiday to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day.
The announcement came from the Ministry of Interior, which issued a statement affirming that all public and private institutions across the country are to observe the holiday.
In line with the celebration, the Federal Government has unveiled the official theme for Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day celebration: “Nigeria @ 65: All Hands on Deck for a Greater Nation.”
In the statement, the Minister of Interior congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad, commending their resilience and contributions to the nation’s unity and progress.

The minister urged citizens to use the day for reflection, to honour the sacrifices of past leaders, and to renew commitment to national development.
This declaration aligns with the tradition that Independence Day, first celebrated in 1960, is a perpetual national holiday under Nigeria’s Public Holidays Act.
Official ceremonies such as flag raising, patriotic events, and cultural displays expected to take place across the federation.
State and local governments are expected to coordinate events to mark the occasion, including parades, lectures, and community gatherings.
