First batch of 200 U.S. troops, military aircraft arrive in Nigeria for counter-terror support mission
The first batch of United States military personnel has arrived in Nigeria, marking the start of an expanded bilateral security cooperation aimed at strengthening counter-terrorism operations in the country’s troubled northeast.
Multiple U.S. military aircraft reportedly touched down at the Air Force Base in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, an area that has remained the epicentre of insurgency activities for over a decade. Military sources indicate that approximately 200 troops are expected as part of the first phase of the deployment.
The troops are said to be in the country primarily for advisory, training, and logistical support roles rather than direct combat operations. Their mission is focused on assisting Nigerian security forces in tackling extremist groups operating in the Lake Chad region, particularly the Islamic State West Africa Province.

Security analysts describe the deployment as a significant step in renewed defence cooperation between the governments of United States and Nigeria. The move comes amid increased insurgent attacks on military formations and civilian communities in parts of the northeast.
While aircraft movements and troop arrivals have been observed, officials from the Nigerian Defence Headquarters have yet to release a detailed public statement outlining the full scope of the operation, including the duration of the deployment and specific operational frameworks.
The development has generated mixed reactions among citizens, with some expressing relief over enhanced international support in the fight against terrorism, while others call for greater transparency regarding foreign military presence on Nigerian soil.
