General Jeremiah Useni passes away at 81

Lt. General Jeremiah Timbut Useni, former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has passed away at the age of 81.

He died on Thursday, January 23, 2025, after a prolonged illness in Paris. Born on February 16, 1943, General Useni would have celebrated his 82nd birthday next month.

His death was confirmed in a statement by Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State, which was signed by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere.

Governor Mutfwang expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing it as a significant blow not only to General Useni’s family but also to the Nigerian Armed Forces, Plateau State, and the nation as a whole.

The governor highlighted General Useni’s exemplary leadership, noting his unwavering dedication to service throughout his life. He praised the General’s tireless efforts to promote peace and security, particularly in Northern Nigeria and Plateau State, and emphasized that his contributions to Nigeria’s security and political landscape would be remembered for years to come.

General Useni’s distinguished career spanned multiple roles, including as Minister of Transport, Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army, and Minister of the FCT. After retiring from the military, he transitioned into politics, serving as the Deputy Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and later as a Senator for Plateau South Senatorial District under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015.

Governor Mutfwang lauded General Useni’s life of selfless service, pointing to his profound contributions to the military, politics, and his community. He also noted the General’s legacy of compassion, generosity, and commitment to improving the lives of others.

On behalf of the government and the people of Plateau State, Governor Mutfwang extended his deepest condolences to the President, the Nigerian Armed Forces, General Useni’s immediate family, and all those mourning the loss of this distinguished elder statesman.
