Gov. Fubara revokes 10,000 jobs approved by Wike, initiates new hiring process

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has revoked the 10,000 positions in the State Civil Service sanctioned by his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, stating that a new recruitment process would be conducted.

Prior to his departure, Governor Wike approved the immediate hiring of a substantial number of young people to fill open positions in the state’s workforce, effective immediately.

However, Fubara, during a meeting with stakeholders in Port Harcourt, on Friday, announced that he scrapped the recruitment because the procedure was flawed and tainted by those entrusted with handling it. After carefully examining the list of candidates, it was discovered that a majority of them, in fact, 60 percent, were too old for the roles they had been selected for, being individuals included for political favors.

Fubara emphasized the need for a more transparent process and expressed dismay that when scrutinizing the chosen candidates from the 23 local government areas, it was evident that some had been included for political reasons.

Addressing concerns about the cancelled jobs, the governor noted that the state needs to focus on providing employment opportunities for the future rather than engaging in political patronage.

He questioned the wisdom of hiring someone at age 52 as a civil servant and raised concerns about their ability to work for many years before retirement.

Meanwhile, Fubara emphasized his commitment to maintaining a strong relationship with the people of Rivers State to ensure effective governance.

He urged service providers for the Rivers State Waste Management Agency to work diligently in clearing waste off the streets promptly to maintain a clean city environment.
