Hygiene, sanitation key to preventing Lassa fever – Medical practitioner

Yobe state Ministry of Health said hygiene and sanitation were essential to prevent Lassa fever.

Dr Muhammed Isyaka of epidemiology department stated this on Thursday in Gashua when the state team on sensitisation against Lassa Fever visited the Emir of Bade’s palace.

“People should promote good community hygiene to discourage rodents from entering homes by keeping food and water covered to prevent contamination by rats and to store grains and other foodstuffs in a rodent-free containers.

“People should dispose garbage far from their homes, maintain a clean environment, avoid drying food materials in open places, should not touch rats and also avoid contact with blood, body fluids while caring for sick persons”, he explained.

The Emir of Bade, Abubakar Suleiman, in his remarks also advised for the return of environmental health inspectors across the state as one of the preventive measures against outbreak and spread of Lassa fever.

Abdullahi Bego, the Commissioner for Information, Home Affairs and Culture and also the campaign team leader reiterated the state government’s commitment to sensitising the entire state to avoid an outbreak.
