Gunmen, suspected to be fighters of the Independent People of Biafra (IPOB), have attacked operatives of the Anambra State Vigilante Service along the Amesi-Uga Road in Aguata Local Government Area, Anambra State, leaving one member injured and their vehicle burnt.

The attack occurred on Sunday, and the injured vigilante was quickly rescued by police operatives who responded to the scene.

In a statement issued on Monday, Anambra State Police Spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident and provided further details, saying: “The police-led security forces on Sunday, 24 November 2024, at about 2:30 pm, swiftly responded to an attack on members of the Anambra State Vigilante Group from Umuchu along the Amesi-Uga Road and rescued one wounded operative.

“The victim was promptly rushed to the hospital and is currently responding to treatment,” Ikenga said.

He added that the police had secured the area to prevent further criminal activity and safeguard properties.

“Regrettably, during the gunfire exchange, a bullet struck the fuel tank of the Toyota Frontier Van belonging to the vigilante group, resulting in the vehicle being completely burnt.”

Ikenga also reported a separate incident in Okpoko, where police operatives responded to a fire outbreak at Chukwunonso Street along Obodoukwu Road.

He said the fire was swiftly controlled by fire service operatives, and an investigation into the cause of the fire is underway, adding that further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
