Nigerian-born mathematician earns global acclaim for nuclear energy research
A Nigerian-born applied mathematician and computational scientist based in the United States, Joshua Adeleke, has gained international recognition for his pioneering work in advanced mathematical modelling across nuclear physics, materials science, and energy systems.
In an interview with Society Plus, Adeleke described his recent recognition as a Fellow of the National Institute of Professional Engineers and Scientists (NIPES) as both humbling and motivating. He said the honour reflects not only his academic and research journey but also the influence of mentors, institutions, and collaborators who have shaped his career.
Adeleke noted that the fellowship affirms the importance of connecting theoretical mathematics with practical solutions, particularly through his computational modelling work at US national laboratories and his contributions to energy development initiatives in Nigeria. He added that the recognition reinforces his responsibility to mentor others, uphold professional excellence, and continue advancing science for national and global development.

His academic path spans three countries. He earned a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Nigeria before completing two Master’s degrees in Mathematical Engineering at the University of L’Aquila in Italy and Brno University of Technology in the Czech Republic under the EU-funded InterMaths Consortium, which trains experts at the intersection of mathematics, engineering, and scientific computing.
Adeleke has also collaborated with leading US research institutions, including Los Alamos National Laboratory and Argonne National Laboratory, where he contributed to nuclear scattering research, atomic-scale modelling, and large-scale simulations of quantum interactions in materials.

The prestigious FNIPES Fellowship, awarded to fewer than 10 per cent of candidates each year, recognises Adeleke’s professional excellence and his dedication to applying advanced mathematics to solving real-world challenges on a global scale.
