Nigerian Catholic priest suspended over secret marriage in US

The Catholic Diocese of Warri has officially suspended Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe from priestly duties following reports of his marriage in the United States.

In a statement titled “Decree of Suspension” dated January 16, 2025, and signed by Bishop Rt. Rev. Anthony Ovayero Ewherido and Chancellor Very Rev. Fr. Clement Abobo, the Church confirmed the development.

According to the statement, Fr. Oghenerukevwe entered into marriage with Ms. Dora Chichah at the Streams of Joy Church in Dallas, USA, on December 29, 2024. Footage of the wedding, widely circulated on social media, triggered the action.

The statement further outlined that the priest incurred a latae sententiae suspension in line with Canon Law for violating clerical celibacy.

“By this action, Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe has incurred a latae sententiae suspension in accordance with Canon 1394 §1,” the Church stated.

The Diocese revealed that Fr. Oghenerukevwe had previously requested to be released from his priestly obligations. However, before completing the required procedures, he went ahead with the marriage.

The statement read:
“As such, he is prohibited from presenting himself as a priest of the Catholic Diocese of Warri in any capacity. All canonical implications associated with this suspension take immediate effect. He retains the right to petition for the revocation or amendment of this decree if he demonstrates a willingness to reform.”

Bishop Ewherido concluded by urging prayers for Fr. Oghenerukevwe, hoping for his reconciliation with the Church.
