Nigerian teen to showcase mathematical brilliance in Japan, Rwanda competitions
Meet Oghenerukevwe Patrick Esemitodje, a remarkable 17-year-old student from Nigerian Tulip International College (NTIC) who will proudly represent Nigeria in two prestigious mathematics competitions.
The Pan African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO) and the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) will be held in Kigali, Rwanda, and Chiba, Japan, respectively, in May and July 2023.
Feyzullah Bilgin, the managing director of NTIC, expressed admiration for Oghenerukevwe’s outstanding achievement and shared an inspiring story about his determination.
Despite being ill on the day of the senior mathematics and senior informatics exams, Oghenerukevwe still sat for both of them. His perseverance paid off when the results were released, and he qualified for the second round in both examinations.
Bilgin emphasized that Oghenerukevwe was the only student from NTIC Ogun who attempted two exams, demonstrating exceptional dedication.
The second round, which took place on January 21, 2023, at Agidingbi Grammar School in Lagos, presented a greater challenge with essay-style questions compared to the objective questions of the first round.
Once again, Oghenerukevwe stood alone in taking both exams on the same day and emerged as the only student in Lagos State to qualify for the second round in both subjects.
This achievement was not a one-time occurrence but a reflection of Oghenerukevwe’s consistent excellence over the past two years.
He has consistently advanced to the third round in both mathematics and informatics, proudly representing Lagos at the national level.
The third round competition, held from April 16 to April 21 at the National Mathematics Centre in Abuja, lasted seven days and showcased the talents of top students from across the country.
Remarkably, Oghenerukevwe managed to attend training sessions for both mathematics and informatics concurrently.
The NTIC director highlighted his exceptional performance, stating, “After the rigorous training and examinations, Rukevwe achieved first place in the third round of the Mathematics examination and secured an impressive second overall position when all previous rounds were taken into account. Regrettably, he placed fourth in the Informatics examination, as the scores from the previous rounds were not considered, resulting in him missing out on representing Nigeria in that category.”
Oghenerukevwe’s dedication and talent are truly commendable, and his achievements serve as an inspiration for aspiring mathematicians.
As he prepares to fly the Nigerian flag at the upcoming PAMO and IMO competitions, the nation eagerly anticipates his remarkable performance on the international stage.
