One dead as building foundation collapses in Abuja

A building foundation collapsed at an excavation site inside Radio House in Abuja, killing a 25-year-old man.

The Federal Fire Service (FFS) confirmed that its personnel responded to a distress call on Sunday, August 24, 2025.

DCF PO Abraham, the FFS’s National Public Relations Officer, stated that rescue teams recovered the victim’s body from the rubble and gave it to his family.

The FFS expressed its condolences and urged construction companies to follow safety regulations to prevent similar incidents.

“The Federal Fire Service commiserates with the bereaved family and urges construction companies to strictly adhere to safety standards in order to prevent similar incidents in the future,” the statement said.

This incident is the latest in a series of building collapses in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). In July 2025, a two-story building under construction in Gwarinpa collapsed, killing two workers.

In May 2025, a partially completed structure in Jabi District caved in during heavy rain, trapping construction workers. And in March 2025, at least three people died in a building collapse in Kubwa.

Urban development experts and civil society organizations have consistently raised concerns about these collapses, blaming them on poor engineering, substandard materials, and a disregard for building plans.

Residents have called on the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) and other regulatory bodies to increase monitoring of construction projects and punish developers who violate the rules.
