Our Women of Substance: Hajiya Hamra Imam, 1947 – date

Hajiya Hamra Imam (Mrs), was born in December, 1947 in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital. She attended Hausari Primary School Maiduguri, between 1954 and 1966 and later proceeded to Borno Provincial Girls School, Maiduguri in 1957 to complete her primary education.

She gained admission into Government Girls Secondary School, Kano, in 1961 and obtained West African School Certificate, Division One, in 1965.

Mrs Hamra Imam also attended Abdullahi Bayero College, Kano (now Bayero University) between 1969 and 1972, where she graduated with a Bachelors degree in English.

Later in 1974, she was at the University of Ibadan for an induction course for University Administrators. There after, she obtained Certificate in Administration in April 1975 from Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM), and Certificate in Administration of Higher Education from University of Manchester, England, in July 1979.

Mrs Hamra Imam started her work with the former North East College of Arts and Science in 1972 as an administrative officer and got promoted to assistant registrar in 1975, taking charge of establishment matters among other duties.

With the upgrading of the North East College of Arts and Science to a University in 1976, she retained the post of assistant registrar, heading the establishments division in the office of the registrar.

Mrs Hamra Imam was later promoted to senior assistant registrar in October 1977 and principal assistant registrar in October, 1979, the post she held until her appointment as a commissioner. And while as principal registrar, she was appointed warden of the female students in the university apart from her normal duties.

As a Director of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Mrs Hamra Imam, is also a member of the Conference of University Administrators of Great Britain, Borno State Women’s League and won the Honorary Colonel of the state of Georgia in U.S.A.

She is also the first female commissioner in Borno State and a former board member at Ashaka Cement PLC.

Hajiya Hamra Imam married late Alkali Kalli Ja’afar Goni Imam (_aka_ AJKG Imam), the union is blessed with four children. Her interests are reading, social activities and cookery.
