Police arrest members Of ‘sai malam’ cult in Sokoto
The Sokoto State Police Command has arrested three suspected members of the notorious “Sai Malam” cult group, said to be recruiting young people through a WhatsApp channel known as Red Chamber.
DSP Ahmad Rufa’i, spokesperson for the command, confirmed that the arrests were made around 11:00 p.m. on Friday during a coordinated, intelligence-driven operation by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit. The principal suspect, Usman Shu’aibu, along with two accomplices, reportedly confessed to membership in the unlawful group.
During interrogation, police said the suspects admitted to being initiated via the Red Chamber WhatsApp platform—allegedly created to attract teenagers and young adults into criminal activities. Investigators described the group as disturbing and dangerous, citing involvement in witchcraft, ritual practices, demonic power-seeking, homosexuality, and coordinated thuggery.

Authorities expressed concern over the growing use of social media and digital platforms by criminal networks to recruit and indoctrinate vulnerable youths. In response, the Police Command advised parents and guardians to monitor their children’s online behavior, social interactions, and peer influence closely.
Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Musa, assured residents that the arrests followed public complaints, adding that the Command remains committed to tracking and dismantling criminal organisations threatening peace and public safety in Sokoto.
“The arrest of these suspects is a clear demonstration that the concerns of the people have been heard. We remain committed to ensuring the safety and security of every citizen,” he stated.
