Zelensky condemns Russia’s Christmas day attack on Ukraine’s power grid

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has denounced what he described as an inhumane Russian assault that struck Ukraine’s energy infrastructure on Christmas Day, killing an energy worker.

The attack involved over 170 missiles and drones, marking the 13th large-scale strike on Ukraine’s power system this year. The offensive continues Russia’s relentless targeting of Ukraine’s energy grid during winter, exacerbating hardships for the war-torn nation.

In response, Ukraine reported that its air force intercepted 58 out of 79 missiles launched by Russia. However, the interception failed to include two Korean KN-23 ballistic missiles. Meanwhile, Russian officials claimed five fatalities from Ukrainian strikes in the Kursk region and North Ossetia.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer strongly criticised the attack, stating:

“I pay tribute to the resilience of the Ukrainian people and the leadership of President Zelensky, who face Putin’s bloody and brutal war machine with remarkable courage, even on Christmas Day.”

Ukraine alleged that a Russian missile traversed Moldovan and Romanian airspace. However, Romanian authorities denied detecting any violation, while Moldova initiated an investigation into the claim.

President Zelensky acknowledged the impact of the strikes, reporting regional blackouts caused by the damage. “Unfortunately, there are some hits. As of now, there are blackouts in several regions,” he said.

The ongoing war has intensified during the winter season, with critical infrastructure becoming a primary target. This latest strike highlights the enduring challenges Ukraine faces in defending its territory and preserving its essential services amidst relentless aggression.
