US issues security alert, cancels visa appointments amid Nigerian protests
The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a new security alert for its citizens as the #EndBadGovernance protests have begun across the country. The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos announced on Thursday that all visa appointments scheduled for August 1 and 2, 2024, have been canceled.
In a statement titled “Security Risks Related to Potential Nationwide Protests,” the U.S. Mission outlined its precautionary measures. The embassy and consulate will operate with essential staff only on August 1 and 2. Non-essential staffers are advised to stay home to avoid potential disruptions from the ongoing protests.
The statement highlighted that media reports suggest protesters are expected to start gathering at Eagles Square in Abuja in the late morning. In Lagos, protests could begin as early as 8:00 a.m. or 9:00 a.m., with key locations including Alausa Park, Freedom Park, and Peace Park. Additional possible protest sites in Lagos are Nahco Bus Stop (Airport Road), Marwa Bus Stop (Lekki-Epe Expressway), and Ikeja ‘Under the Bridge’ (Intersection of Obafemi Awolowo and Allen Avenue).
The U.S. Mission warned that protests might occur at other times and locations across Abuja, Lagos, and other major cities in Nigeria over the coming days. Based on previous experiences, these protests may involve roadblocks, checkpoints, traffic congestion, and physical confrontations. There is also a heightened risk of terror attacks, with terrorist groups potentially using the protests as an opportunity to strike.

The U.S. Mission advises its citizens in Nigeria to avoid areas where protests are taking place, stay away from crowds, and exercise caution if they find themselves near large gatherings. Citizens are also encouraged to keep informed by monitoring local media, maintain a low profile, verify flight schedules with airlines, review their personal security plans, keep their cell phones charged for emergencies, and carry proper identification.
“The Consular Sections of Embassy Abuja and Consulate General Lagos will offer reduced emergency American Citizen Services only. All visa appointments have been canceled,” the statement read.
