Daily Trust, MacArthur Foundation, train Neptune Prime journalist, others in budget tracking, investigation
Story by Kasim Isa Muhammad
The Daily Trust Foundation, in partnership with the MacArthur Foundation, is training twenty journalists from the North-East in budget tracking and investigation.
Among the participants is Kasim Isa Muhammad, representing Neptune Prime Limited.
The three-day workshop in Gombe State, aims to equip participants with a comprehensive understanding of budget preparation, cycles, revenue sources, and expenditure tracking for accountability.
According to Bilya Bala, Chairman of the Daily Trust Foundation, the organisation’s mission is to contribute to Nigeria’s growth and development.
He highlighted Daily Trust’s role in providing balanced news coverage, especially during times when international media portrayed Nigeria unfavourably.
Bala expressed optimism that the training will empower journalists to hold sub-nationals accountable and promote good governance through data-driven reporting.
Bala emphasised the need for journalists to move beyond merely reporting government statements and instead, investigate and track government expenditures.
“We want journalists to be aware of this critical aspect of their responsibility and perform it honestly, uncovering evidence of executed projects and deficits,” he said.
Mijinyawa Tilde, Gombe State Commissioner of Information and Culture, commended Daily Trust and the MacArthur Foundation for their initiative.
