WCC calls for sanctions on Israel

The World Council of Churches (WCC) has issued a formal call for sanctions against the State of Israel, citing concerns over human rights violations and the ongoing conflict with Palestinians.

In a statement released on Tuesday, WCC leaders urged member churches and the international community to support measures that would hold Israel accountable for actions they say undermine peace and justice in the region. The appeal specifically references military operations in the occupied Palestinian territories and alleged breaches of international humanitarian law.

The WCC, a global fellowship of Christian denominations representing tens of millions of adherents, said sanctions could include economic, trade, and diplomatic measures aimed at pressuring the Israeli government to comply with international law and engage in meaningful negotiations toward a lasting peace.

Rev. Dr. Jerry Pillay, General Secretary of the World Council of Churches, stated that the organisation’s stance is rooted in a commitment to justice, human dignity and the protection of civilians affected by conflict. He emphasised that the call for sanctions is not directed at Jewish people or Judaism, but at government policies.

The announcement has drawn mixed reactions internationally, with some human rights groups welcoming the move as a stance for accountability, while others, including pro-Israel organisations and governments condemned the call as one sided and unlikely to foster constructive dialogue.

The WCC’s action contributes to a growing global debate over accountability, humanitarian protections, and the search for a peaceful resolution to long-standing tensions in the Middle East.
