Minister of information suspends media aide over speculation on governorship ambition

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has suspended one of his aides following public comments and media reports linking him to permutations over the 2027 Niger State governorship race.

The suspension followed a statement credited to the aide, which allegedly suggested that the minister was being positioned or considered as a potential contender for the governorship of Niger State. The comments sparked widespread political reactions and speculation.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the minister distanced himself from the remarks, describing them as unauthorised, premature and personal opinions that did not reflect his position or that of the federal government.

Idris stressed that he remains fully committed to his responsibilities as a cabinet member in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and has no current governorship ambition.

“The aide acted without approval and outside the bounds of official communication,” the statement said, adding that the suspension was necessary to maintain discipline and prevent the misuse of the minister’s office for political conjecture.

The development comes amid growing political calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections, with several prominent figures across the country being linked to future electoral contests.
