Nigeria meets Egypt through football, by Falmata Ma’aji Muhammad

Story by Falmata Ma’aji Muhammad (Student at Helwan University, Cairo, Egypt)

Football in Egypt isn’t just a sport, it feels like a festival. I remember the first time I saw how seriously Egyptians take it.

As the sun went down, coffee shops turned into mini stadiums. Chairs and tables spilled onto the sidewalks, TVs were set up outside, and people crowded together, shouting at every pass and goal. If you live nearby, forget about sleep, the noise is constant, but for them it’s pure joy.

What surprised me most was how quickly Egyptians connect Nigeria with football. During the AFCON clash between Egypt and Nigeria, both teams played brilliantly.

Even though the match was intense, there were no hard feelings. Egyptians respected Nigeria’s performance, and I felt proud seeing how the game elevated our image here.

The best part was on campus. After the match, I received congratulatory messages from my lecturers and friendly remarks from Egyptian colleagues.

Their kindness showed me that football isn’t just about competition, it’s about connection.

For me, football in Egypt has become more than entertainment. It’s a bridge between cultures, a way of building friendships, and a reminder that sport can unite people across borders.

Every cheer in the coffee shops, every conversation about Nigeria, makes me feel that football truly brings Nigeria and Egypt together in celebration.
