Falconets defeat Senegal to reach final round of U-20 women’s World Cup qualifiers

Nigeria’s U-20 women, the Falconets, are through to the last round of the African qualifiers for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after defeating Senegal women’s national under-20 football team 2-1 in the return leg of their tie on Saturday evening in Diamniadio.

The result sealed a 3-1 aggregate win for the two-time world silver medallists, who will now take on Malawi women’s national under-20 football team in May for a ticket to the global tournament in Poland.

Holding a narrow 1-0 advantage from the first leg in Abeokuta, Nigeria entered the encounter determined to finish the job. They struck early in the 19th minute when Kindness Ifeanyi powered home a header from a corner, stretching the aggregate lead and silencing the home crowd.

The Falconets remained organised after the interval, continuing to trouble their hosts with dangerous deliveries from set pieces. Their dominance paid off again in the 69th minute as Precious Oscar converted another pinpoint corner from Tumininu Adeshina, effectively putting the contest beyond Senegal.

The hosts managed a late response in the 76th minute through Sokhna N.T. Pene, but it proved no more than a consolation. Nigeria’s defensive discipline ensured there were no further scares as they calmly saw out the tie.

Malawi booked their place in the decisive round after edging Guinea-Bissau, setting up what promises to be a tense two-legged battle. Four African teams will qualify for the championship, scheduled for September in Poland.

With their pedigree at this level and momentum firmly on their side, the Falconets are now just one step away from another appearance on the world stage.
