NSCIA declares start of Ramadan 1447 A.H., calls for patience, unity
Abuja — The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has formally announced the commencement of Ramadan 1447 A.H., urging Muslims across the country to begin the holy fast with steadfastness and resilience amid prevailing challenges.
Led by its President-General and Amirul Mumineen, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the Council stated that the crescent marking the start of Ramadan is expected to be sighted on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, corresponding to 29th Sha’aban 1447 A.H. If the moon is sighted, fasting will begin on Wednesday, February 18; otherwise, Ramadan will commence on Thursday, February 19.
The Council disclosed that the National Moon Sighting Committee (NMSC), working in collaboration with the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), has put mechanisms in place to monitor the crescent’s appearance and advise Muslim leaders accordingly. It added that information on recognised traditional and religious authorities for confirming credible moon sightings is available on its official website.
In a message addressed to the Muslim Ummah, the NSCIA acknowledged what it described as a difficult year for Muslims in Nigeria, citing rising Islamophobic narratives, insecurity caused by insurgents and bandits, and what it termed perceived bias in sections of the media.
The Council referenced incidents in parts of Kwara State, Southern Kaduna, Maiduguri, and Kebbi, expressing concern over portrayals of Muslims as aggressors in some reports, while alleging that attacks on Muslim communities often receive limited coverage.
The NSCIA also raised concerns over the election timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), noting that the scheduled presidential and governorship elections may coincide with Ramadan and possibly Eid-ul-Fitr. It called for a reconsideration of the dates to ensure that religious observances are not disrupted.
Despite the concerns, the Council encouraged Muslims to draw inspiration from the perseverance of early believers, observing Ramadan with sincerity, devotion, patience, and righteous conduct. It highlighted the spiritual essence of the month as a time for fasting, prayer, reflection, and increased acts of charity, in line with Qur’anic teachings.
The Secretary-General of NSCIA, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, offered prayers for peace, good health, and spiritual upliftment for Muslims during Ramadan 1447 A.H., as well as divine protection and stability for Nigeria.
