NEDC: The multi-faceted commission transforming lives in the North-East

The North-East Development Commission (NEDC) is a federal agency that was established in 2017 to address the developmental challenges arising from the Boko Haram insurgency in the North East region of Nigeria.

The commission has been implementing various projects and initiatives to improve the lives and livelihoods of the people in the region, but its work is often not well-known by the public.

Neptune Prime did a thorough research on the activities and uncovered 5 key aspects of NEDC’s work.

Yearly statutory allocation

The commission receives a yearly statutory allocation from the federal government, which is a percentage of the federal account.

This allocation is strictly used for NEDC’s development projects in the region, demonstrating the commission’s financial strength and autonomy.

Developmental initiatives

The commission has launched several initiatives for youth and women empowerment in the North East, which include skill training and entrepreneurial support to create economic opportunities and sustainability in the region.

Grants and loans

The commission has also provided grants and loans to young and female entrepreneurs to start or expand their businesses.

Improving education

The commission has invested in improving education and infrastructure in the region, reflecting its commitment to enhancing access to quality education and essential services for the people. It claimed to have built and renovated schools, libraries, laboratories, and hostels, as well as provided scholarships and bursaries to students.

Response to disaster

The commission has played a vital role in disaster response and management in the North East. It has, in the past, provided relief materials, medical supplies, and temporary shelters to victims of floods, landslides, and fire outbreaks, as well as coordinated with other agencies and organisations to ensure effective and timely delivery of humanitarian assistance.

Neptune Prime observed that NEDC is a multifaceted and dynamic agency that is making a significant difference in the North East region of Nigeria.
