Opposition says Tinubu lacks clear understanding of Nigeria’s insecurity crisis

Story by Susan Mbamah

Opposition parties have accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of lacking a proper grasp of the insecurity challenges confronting the country, saying his administration has failed to present a coherent and workable strategy to curb rising violence.

Spokespersons of major opposition parties, including the Labour Party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and African Democratic Congress (ADC), faulted recent statements from the Presidency urging herders to end open grazing and surrender illegal weapons. According to them, such directives amount to “political rhetoric” rather than concrete measures capable of addressing the escalating security threats.

They argued that despite repeated assurances from the government, killings, kidnappings, bandit attacks and communal clashes continue across several states, suggesting that the administration has “misdiagnosed” the root causes of the crisis.

The PDP went further, warning that the government risks “surrendering to terrorists” if urgent reforms are not implemented, while the ADC criticised what it described as ad-hoc policing decisions that have not improved safety for citizens.

The opposition insisted that Nigerians are demanding clear policies, better coordination among security agencies, improved funding and modern equipment, as well as long-term reforms addressing the socio-economic drivers of insecurity.

They urged the President to overhaul the current security approach, engage experts, and deliver practical solutions rather than public statements, stressing that lives and livelihoods remain at stake.
