Peter Opara takes charge as FCT commissioner of police

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has appointed Peter Opara as the new Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. Opara replaces Benneth Igwe, who has been promoted to Assistant Inspector General of Police and assigned to Zone 7, Abuja.
A statement released on Saturday by the PSC’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani, confirmed the appointment. Opara, formerly the Commissioner of Police at the Force Secretary’s Office, has held numerous positions in the Nigerian Police Force, including Deputy Commissioner of Administration and Finance for the Imo State Command. He also served as the Personal Assistant to the former PSC Chairman, retired IGP Mike Okiro.
In his expansive career, Opara has taken on various roles, including DCP Legal Studies at the Police Academy (POLAC) in Wudil, Kano, and Area Commander in both Aba and Uyo. He has also served internationally as the Senior Deputy Defence Adviser for Nigeria’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.

The Police Service Commission also approved the recommendation of the Inspector-General of Police for CP Festus Eribo to replace CP Miller Gagere Dantawaye as the Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State. Eribo, a law graduate from the University of Calabar, previously served as Commissioner of Police in Taraba State and held various other roles, including Area Commander in Lagos and Deputy Commissioner for Operations in Kogi State.
The PSC had earlier announced the postings of Commissioners of Police for Abia, Lagos, and Ebonyi States as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen security operations across the country.
