South African authorities arrest Nigerian man, girlfriend for drug trafficking

South African authorities have arrested a 48-year-old Nigerian man and his 33-year-old girlfriend for drug trafficking and illegal possession of illicit substances.

The arrest followed a sting operation conducted on Wednesday, December 18, involving the North West provincial drug task team and the Lichtenburg K9 unit.

Acting on intelligence, undercover officers posed as buyers, leading to the suspect’s arrest after he sold drugs worth R40,000. “An undercover operation was conducted, which led to the arrest of the pair soon after selling drugs valued at R40,000. “Around 649 mandrax tablets, 40 packets of crystal meth and transparent plastic containing CAT drugs were seized,” said Lieutenant Colonel Tinyiko Mathebula, provincial spokesperson for the Hawks.

The man’s girlfriend was also detained after allegedly attempting to bribe officers to secure his release. A 28-year-old South African woman involved in the operation was arrested and charged with corruption.

“She was subsequently arrested and charged with corruption,” added Mathebula.
