Ogun man shoots stepbrother over ₦4,000 debt

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a man, Lekan Lasisi, following the death of his stepbrother after an argument over a ₦4,000 debt in the Abule Tuntun area of Odeda Local Government Area of the state.

PUNCH Metro gathered on Monday that the incident occurred on December 19 after Lasisi confronted his stepbrother over his habitual failure to repay borrowed money.

According to reports, Lasisi became upset after being repeatedly approached by creditors demanding that he settle his stepbrother’s debts on his behalf. This reportedly sparked an argument when the deceased returned from the market.

The disagreement later escalated when the victim allegedly brought out a cutlass to attack Lasisi. In response, Lasisi claimed he drew a gun, which he said accidentally discharged and struck his stepbrother, leading to his death.

In an interrogation video shared on Monday by Facebook user Makinde Fasunle, Lasisi recounted that earlier in the day, the deceased had gone to the market with goods. While heading to a bus stop, one of the creditors reportedly confronted Lasisi, complaining that the deceased had again failed to repay a debt of ₦4,000.

Lasisi said he later questioned his stepbrother about his recurring debts and the embarrassment it was causing the family, which led to a heated confrontation.

“When he took a cutlass, I brought out my gun. I am a hunter,” Lasisi said. “He is fond of drinking and exhibiting attitudes that can cause trouble.

“On the day of the incident, he took garri to the market. We met at the expressway where we usually board vehicles, and a woman told me he owed her ₦4,000. When I confronted him, he became angry and started causing trouble. He was the one who first brought out a cutlass. I brought out my gun, but it accidentally discharged and hit him. I did not intend to kill him.”

Lasisi admitted to firing the gun but maintained that the shooting was accidental and that he had no intention of killing his stepbrother.
