Iran says no talks with US as military threats escalate
Iran has rejected negotiations with the United States, insisting that diplomatic talks cannot take place while Washington maintains military threats against Tehran, officials said on Wednesday amid rising tensions between the two nations.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that there has been no recent contact between Iranian officials and the U.S. side — including special envoy Steve Witkoff — and that Tehran has not requested negotiations. He said diplomacy must be conducted on the basis of mutual respect, equality and without threats, and cannot succeed “in an atmosphere of threats and excessive demands.”

His comments came as U.S. President Donald Trump warned that time is running out for Iran to engage in talks, while simultaneously refusing to rule out military action to counter Tehran’s nuclear ambitions and the deadly crackdown on domestic protests. In recent days, the U.S. has deployed a naval strike group toward the Middle East, heightening concerns of a possible military confrontation.
Iran has maintained that it is open to dialogue in principle but insists that any negotiations must not be conducted “under threat.” The country’s leadership has also been engaging with regional partners to seek consensus on preventing conflict and de-escalating the situation.

The standoff underscores deep mistrust between Tehran and Washington, with Iranian officials emphasising that meaningful talks can only occur in a calm diplomatic environment, not one dominated by military posturing.
