Tinubu nominates Jamila for INEC, Yusuf for NAHCON leadership

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has asked the Senate to confirm the appointments of Retired Admiral Jamila Abubakar Sadiq as National Commissioner at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Ambassador Ismail Yusuf as Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON).

The requests were contained in two separate letters addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and read during Tuesday’s plenary session.

In his letter, Tinubu explained that Jamila Abubakar Sadiq’s nomination as INEC National Commissioner representing Adamawa State complies with Section 154(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). He urged lawmakers to give the request speedy consideration and confirmation.

After the letter was read, Akpabio referred the nomination to the Senate Committee on INEC for further legislative scrutiny, directing the panel to report back to plenary within one week.

In a separate communication, the President also sought Senate approval for Ambassador Ismail Yusuf’s appointment as NAHCON Chairman. Tinubu noted that the nomination aligns with Section 3(2) of the NAHCON Act, 2026, which requires Senate confirmation for the position.

Akpabio subsequently forwarded the NAHCON nomination to the Senate Committee on Rules and Business for legislative action, also mandating it to submit its report within one week.

If confirmed, the appointments will fill key leadership roles in two critical national institutions. INEC is responsible for organizing and supervising elections nationwide, while NAHCON oversees and regulates Hajj operations for Nigerian pilgrims.

Both nominees are expected to undergo screening by the relevant Senate committees before their confirmations are decided at plenary.
